Asthma A to Z - Asthma Prevention

Although we currently don't know how to prevent asthma, there are several strategies that can help you lower your chances of having an asthma attack. Those strategies include:

• Learn about your asthma and how to control it. Your provider can suggest a variety of ways to research your condition.
• Tell your provider about any other medications that you're taking, in case one of them affects your asthma. This includes over the counter medications and supplements.
• Learn to use your asthma medication properly. Although it may seem simple, ask your provider to demonstrate how to use your inhaler. This is very important. If you don't use your inhaler correctly, less medication will get into your airways.
• If you're having problems taking your asthma medicine, let your provider know right away.
• As much as possible, avoid things that make your asthma worse.
• Get regular checkups from your provider.
• Follow the asthma self-management plan that you and your provider develop together.
